Sexual Violence in Conflict - a topic at PfC Conference 2012

Rape and other forms of sexual violence are being used against women as a weapon of war across the globe. This years' PfC Conference brings attention to this important issue.

Modern conflicts are not only fought in trenches and battlefields, but also within communities and on women's bodies.

The Nobel Women's Initiative(NWI) works with partner organizations at the local level to bring attention to the prevalence and severity of sexual violence in conflict situations worldwide.

International Campaign

This year they launch a global campaign to raise awareness througout the world. It will be presented by the leader of NWI Liz Bernstein on the PfC Conference 20 th March.

The NWI  work toward preventing and eliminating sexual violence  as a tactic of war, and advocate for access to medical care, empowerment initiatives, and restitution for survivors.   Efforts are made towards the strengthening of justice mechanisms -- such as the International Criminal Court -- to end impunity for these crimes.

Important UN resolutions

NWI advocate for sexual violence to be addressed as a security concern by the international community, and for the full implementation of comprehensive national action plans as called for in UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820. We promote women's access to justice at the local, national, and international levels.
